Fire ecology and bushfire management are core research areas at the Hawkesbury Institute for the Environment (HIE). Our research interests are wide ranging, including the fundamental biophysical interactions between climate, fire and vegetation from which fire regimes emerge, vegetation dynamics related to fuel accumulation and drying, fire impacts on vegetation and post-fire recovery, impacts of climate change on fire regimes and fire risk, and fire risk modelling.
HIE is also host to the NSW Bushfire and Natural Hazards Research Centre.
Launched in January 2023 and under the leadership of Professor Matthias Boer, the Centre is an interdisciplinary collaboration between the NSW Government and a consortium of six universities. It aims to deliver co-designed research to address recommendations from the 2020 NSW Bushfire Inquiry and the 2022 Flood Inquiry.
